You reflect on the times when they were so nice and pleasant to be around. Some of the worst abusers are smart enough to rally friends and family — conditioning even the outside world to believe their fabrications about you. Gaslighting has been proven to be the most powerful form of abuse because it affects your mind, and no one else can see it.
No one wants to admit that someone had that much control over them — and worse, that they held the power to alter their consciousness. Abuse is not your fault and admitting you were abused can be difficult. Identifying what happened to you prevents you from staying in an abusive situation, and helps prevent you from repeating the unhealthy pattern.
